Abby Lee Miller Undergoes Emergency Life-Saving Surgery

Abby Lee Miller, star of Dance Moms, has undergone emergency, life-saving surgery after doctors discovered what was thought to be an infection in her spine.

Miller had been complaining of neck pain for a few days when doctors made the terrifying discovery on Tuesday. They said that if something wasn’t done immediately, she could have died.

“She came to me complaining of excruciating neck pain a few days ago,” said Dr Hooman M. Melamed during a press conference. “I had to send her to the emergency room. Something bad was going to happen if something was not done.

“We were trying to transfer her, but I knew she may not make it by the time we get to another hospital. She had what appeared to be an infection that went from the bottom of her neck to the 11th vertebrae in the mid-part of the spine. That’s about 13-14 segments. It’s extremely unusual.”

Doctors said that Miller had become “completely, basically paralysed” and that she was close to dying as he blood pressure began dropping dramatically.

Miller was rushed into surgery that took almost five-hours to complete. She is currently recovering in ICU at Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Rey Hospital.

“We are seeing improvement. We are still not out of the woods yet. We need more imaging to make sure the infection or whatever it was is out,” said Dr Melamed. “I don’t need to do anymore surgery in the short term, but she’s definitely going to need more surgery - we’ll need to do rods and screws to stabilize her.”

Miller is still to undergo tests to determine what effects the surgery will have on her long term, but Dr. Melamed said they are currently unsure if she will be able to walk again.

“She’s made some recovery within 24 hours. Right now she is in the ICU. We need to get another MRI. Yesterday, she was completely numb from the neck down. Now, she can feel from the neck down.”

Dr Melamed has said that it is unclear what caused the initial infection and that it was highly unusual to see this type of illness in someone like Miller who has what he calls “very well controlled diabetes”.

Spinal infections typically affect people who have diabetes, are a smoker or have heart problems.

The news of Miller’s surgery comes just after she was released early from a Federal Correctional Complex, where she served 259 days out of her original one year and one day sentence for bankruptcy fraud.

Abby Lee Miller's doctor has now confirmed that she has been diagnosed with Cancer. What was originally thought to be an infection on her spine was actually non-hodgkins lymphoma.

“It was not an infection, it was a type of a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma – it’s a type of a cancer,” said Dr. Hooman M. Melamed via People.

Our thoughts are with Abby during this time.
