Selena Gomez Under Fire For "Controversial" New Album Art

The last 12 months have been a bit of a rollercoaster for Selena Gomez; the singer was forced to cancel the remainder of her Revival tour to enter rehab for, at the time, undisclosed reasons, and her Netflix show 13 Reasons Why has created a storm of controversy about the responsible depiction of depression and suicide in the media.

And now the conversation seems to be continuing, after Sel shared the new cover art for her upcoming single Bad Liar on Instagram.

The over-exposed shot is extremely raw; the 24-year-old doesn't appear to be wearing any make-up, has her hair slicked back and is very clearly wearing a hospital wristband with the word "risk" visible.

That, combined with the bandage on Selena's wrist and the fact that she appears to be crying in the photo, has sent her fans into a frenzy, with many claiming that the picture is a blatant glamourisation of suicide.

"I didn't think anything of the fall risk wristband until I saw the bandage on her wrist," one commenter wrote. "What's this pic trying to convey? Attempted suicide? Lame."

But photographer Petra Collins, who shot the album art, quickly waded in, explaining that the photoshoot had taken place right after Selena had been discharged from hospital, where she was being treated for her ongoing autoimmune disease.

"Not at all," Collins posted. "Selena came straight from hospital to his shoot - from being there for Lupus."

The Can't Keep My Hands To Myself singer has opened up in recent interviews, revealing that dealing with Lupus caused her to become depressed and anxious and telling Cosmo that she began suffering from panic attacks.

"What I wanted to say is that life is so stressful, and I get the desire to just escape it," she said. "But I wasn’t figuring my own stuff out, so I felt I had no wisdom to share.

"And so maybe I thought everybody out there was thinking, 'This is a waste of time'."

Bad Liar is expected to drop later today.
