6 Things You NEVER Knew About the Dark Knight

The 2008 Christopher Nolan film, The Dark Knight, is being considered as one of the best superhero movies of all time. Nominated for eight Oscars and having brought in more than $A1.3 billion worldwide, there are a few secrets about the film that the most diehard of fans should know.

According to news.com.au, here're six things you never knew about the blockbuster!

#1 – JACK NICHOLSON WAS FURIOUS THEY DIDN’T CAST HIM AS JOKER.

The American Actor who originally played the Joker in the 1989’s Batman has revealed to MTV he was pretty annoyed he wasn’t asked to reprise the role in The Dark Knight.

“They never asked me about a sequel with the Joker. I know how to do that! Nobody ever asked me ... Maybe it’s not a mistake. Maybe it was the right thing, but to be candid, I’m furious.” Nicholson told MTV.

When asked why he was so fired up, Nicholson said: “Well, the Joker comes from my childhood. That’s how I got involved with it in the first place. It’s a part I always thought I should play.”

#2 – MATT DAMON TURNED DOWN THE ROLE OF HARVEY DENT

Matt Damon was originally asked to play Harvey Dent, Gotham City’s District Attorney, but had to turn it down because of his schedule.

However, Damon added that he doesn’t think he could have done a better job at playing the role than Aaron Eckhart.

“Look, Aaron is a great actor, so the movie didn’t suffer for it. Every now and then you get one and you can’t do it.”

#3 – LEDGER ASKED TO BE BEATEN

If you think the fight scene between Batman and the Joker in the interrogation room looks realistic, well that’s because it was!

Apparently, Ledger encouraged Bale to be rough during the scene.

“The more I beat him, the more he enjoys it; and Heath was kinda egging me on, going, ‘Go on, go on, go on!’ But he was slamming himself around, and there were tiled walls inside of that set which was cracked and dented. His commitment was total.”

#4 – BATMAN NEVER RODE THE BATPOD

The Batpod is Batman’s two-wheeled bike that transforms from the Batmobile. Bale has told GQ that it was so difficult to drive that only one stunt man could ride it.

“The guy who did ride it in the film, Jean-Pierre Goy, was the only guy, out of dozens of bike champs and stunt men on set, who could actually stay on the damn thing for any length of time,” Bale said.

“Embarrassingly, I didn’t get to ride it. There are other motorbikes in the film that I got to burn about on, but not the Batpod — it was deemed too dangerous; they needed me in one piece to finish the damn movie.”

#5 – POLITICAL CAMEO

During the scene when the Joker gatecrashes a party, a man stands up to him and says, “We’re not intimidated by thugs”.

The man in that scene is US Senator Patrick Leahy. Patrick has also appeared in five other Batman movies.

“He (Heath Ledger) scared the heck out of me with the knife,” Leahy said to Roll Call, “I didn’t have to act.”

The Senator from Vermont was extremely impressed with Ledger’s performance on set: “We’d be sitting around the chow line or whatnot, and he’s just joking with everybody, then they’d say ‘Action,’ he’d turn into this, very, very menacing person.”

#6 – DUBBED LIKE DAD

In 1989, Italian actor Giancarlo Giannini was the Joker’s voice dub for the Italian release of the film. 19 years later his son, Adriano Giannini was the voice dub for Heath Ledger’s Joker in the Italian version of The Dark Knight.
