Apple Submit Proposal For 13 New Emojis

Tech company Apple has proposed a list of 13 new emojis to Unicode Consortium to represent people with various disabilities.

“One in seven people around the world has some form of disability, whether that be a physical disability involving vision, hearing, or loss of physical motor skills, or a more hidden, invisible disability,” wrote Apple in their proposal.

Apple believe that this request  is a, “starting point for greater representation in the emoji universe,” and is not meant to be a definitive list of all depictions of disabilities.

Amongst the proposed emojis are people in wheelchairs, a guide dog and prosthetic limbs. To design the emojis, Apple worked alongside National Association of the Deaf, the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, and the American Council of the Blind.

If the proposal is approved, the new emojis would be available on phones next year.
