Sydney, We Have Your Australia Day Festivities Covered

Australia Day is coming up and here is a list of events you can attend if you have nothing planned or if you’re just a tad bit over that backyard barbecue. 

The City

Australia Day Spectacular

Live music and entertainment will be available at Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour, including a dragon boat race. Hot Dub Time Machine will give you the opportunity to dance your heart out from 8:15pm, and at 8:50pm you can soak in a performance of an Indigenous Welcome song that will be performed by Wuruniri Music and Dance Group. The night will end with a firework display at 9pm.


Sydney’s famous ferries are set to churn up the Harbour in a race to determine who will reach the finish line under the Harbour Bridge first. 

Smoking Ceremony

A traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony will take place at Barangaroo and will consist of the creation of fire, cleansing smoke to ward off bad spirits and make way for fresh beginnings. The ceremony will start at 7:30am at Barangaroo. Additional smoking ceremonies will take place at Campbells Cover at 10:30am and at the Opera House at 7:30pm.

Tall Ships Race

The tall ships race will take place at 1pm from Bradley’s Head to Sydney Harbour as they compete to reach the finish line first.

28th Annual GIO OZ Day 10K Wheelchair Race

A wheelchair race containing some of the best wheelchair athletes from Australia, Canada, South Korea, Brazil, Japan, USA, South Africa, Thailand and France kicks off from 9am in The Rocks.

Children’s Festival

Keeping the kids entertained will be easy at the Children’s Festival at Tumbalong Park with entertainment from 11am to 6pm. Jimmy Giggle from Giggle and Hoot will be hosting the event with he Wiggles’ performing at 11am till noon. There will also be performances from Scotty Cam and Leo Bonne, Bob the Builder, and “Children are Stinky”. Acrobatics, stunts and humour round out the event. 

Salute to Australia

Vantage points around the Harbour will host a tri-service salute with armed forces from the Australian Army, Royal Australian Air Force, and Royal Australian Navy. The salute will also be accompanied with by choirs singing the national anthem. Salutes start from 10:45am.

Live at Sydney Opera House

Australia’s best artists will be performing at the Sydney Opera House. You can catch Tina Arena, Dami Im, Guy Sebastian, James Morrison, Nat Conway, and Human Nature from 7:30pm. Bookings required. 

South and East


Head on down to Cronulla Beach for a whole range of entertainment from 1pm by musicians such as JC All-Stars, Ten Tenors, Miranda & Engadine Musical Societies, Original Sin INXS Show, and the Storm Surfers. Cap off the night with fireworks at 9pm. Also check out Blaxland Oval, Illawong for a family-friendly time with live shows featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, music and then fireworks at 9pm.


Coogee Beach will be hosting a range of inflatable amusements such as waterslides between 10am and 2pm. Little Bay will be the place to be for picnic, bush dance celebrations, arts and crafts, and native animal and reptile displays from Noon till 2pm. 

Georges River

From 10am until 9pm at Carss Bush Park you can take in some live shows featuring Snoopy and Hoot and Hootabelle, live music, and flamenco and Nepalese dancers. Amusements rides will also be available alongside multicultural food stalls with a fireworks display rounding out the day at 9pm. 


A community sausage sizzle will be held at Deepena Reserve, Dolls Point that will also include face-painting, drumming workshops, lamington-making and live performances from Aboriginal Dance and Jellybean Jam. The event will run from 8:15am until 1pm. 


Northern Beaches

Dee Why Beach will be home to a barbecue breakfast, car and bike shows, camel rides, face painting, and a thong throwing competition along with amusement rides and live entertainment from 8am till 2pm. Meanwhile, from 7:30am until 11:30am a barbecue breakfast will also be held at Bert Payne Park, Newport Beach along with rides, food stalls, beach activities, and an address from Australia Day ambassador Paul French. Warringah Aquatic Centre will see a barbecue breakfast, face painting, an aqua disco, water bombing, and an inflatable thong race kick off from 9am till noon. From 8am until noon you can enjoy a barbecue breakfast along with face painting, lawn games, amusements, stage performances, water slides, a thong throwing competition, and a model boat display at Lakeside Park, North Narrabeen. 

North Sydney

Bradfield Park will be showcasing free live music and entertainment along with a variety of barbecued cuisines from around the world while also offering you the chance to get up close and personal with native Australian animals from 10am. At 10am the Australia Day Celtic Festival will also be held at St Leonard’s Park from 10am where you can enjoy pipe bands, Scottish soldier re-enactments, Irish and Scottish dancers, Celtic food stalls and a grand parade after 12:30pm.


Head on down to the Concourse Pavillion, Chatswood between 9:30am and 11am form a free barbecue and live performances from the Willoughby band. 

Lane Cove

Lane Cove Plaza will be the place to be for live music and a sausage sizzle from 10am. 


From 5pm you can catch the annual family concert at North Ryde Common featuring live music from bands such as Vulture Street Powderfinger tribute, The Reel Matilda and Steve Hart & The All Stars. You can also have some fun checking out food trucks and enjoying some amusement rides before witnessing a fireworks display at 9pm. 


From 10:30am at Bicentennial Park you can a celebration of multiculturalism, dance, food, and music. As well as games and rides you can also expect sheep shearing and sheep dog demonstrations, local bush bands, cultural performances, the Wunriniri Music & Dance Group, ABC Kids’ SplashDance, and a reptile show. After the event wraps up you can head down to the Ku-ring-gai Fitness and Aquatic Centre for an afternoon of aquatic fun and entertainment. 


An Australia Day Pool Party will be held at 9am at the Hornsby Aquatic and Leisure Centre with aquatic activities such as free Zumba dance classes, inflatable obstacle courses, a dunking machine and a pool bombing and thong throwing competition. A gold coin donation will be required to access the event. Meanwhile, over in Hornsby Park from 9am you can indulge in a sausage sizzle and bake sale. 

The Hills

Catch a variety of events from 10am at Bella Vista Farm. Enjoy balloon twisting, face painting, a pop-up library, and live entertainment as well as displays like whip cracking, black smithing, and working dog demonstrations. Fireworks will kick off at 9pm. 


Inner West

From 2pm live performances from local musicians and entertainment from Splashdance Live will be available at Enmore Park with fireworks at 8:45pm. You can also check out the annual Yabun Festival at Victoria Park, Camperdown  from 10am to 7pm. 


You can expect to find a waterslide, obstacle course, climbing wall and other activities available for you to enjoy at Burwood Park from 5pm, as well as food stalls and live music. At 8pm you can catch a free screening of a movie to round out the night. 


From 10am in Strathfield Park you can a sausage sizzle and Aussie themed kids activities and entertainment. A screening of the Aussie film Paper Planes will kick off at 7:30pm.


Festivities start at 6am at Parramatta Park with a sky display of big air balloons. Afterwards you can check out a variety of rides, workshops, entertainment and food stalls. An all day car show will be available for motorist enthusiasts to check out too as well as a barbecue and live music. Fireworks kick off at 9pm. 


From 4pm until 9:45pm the Australia Day Concert and Fireworks Spectacular at The Rooty Hills near Eastern Road will showcase free amusements rides for all ages as well as BMX shows, a Yamaha stunt driver, food trucks, Ute Master and a fireworks display to close the event. 


If bubble soccer, face painting, tug of war, ring toss, Pavlova decorating, cow milking, and a typical Aussie barbecue full of burgers, ice cream and fairy floss sound like your kind of thing, make sure to head down to Jamison Park from 3pm to 8pm. There will also be a performance by Shaun the Sheep for the little ones to enjoy. 


Live entertainment, free amusement rides, activities and stalls will be available at Holroyd Gardens from 5pm to 9pm with a firework display ending the night. 


Enjoy some free entry to Fairfield Leisure Centre and indulge in a barbecue, giveaways and DJs between 10am to 4pm. You can also scored free entry to Prairiewood Leisure Centre and Prairiewoodm’s Aquatopia Water Park for a free barbecue, DJs and giveaways from 10am till 4pm. 


Beginning at 2pm, you can catch a range of performances on the main stage at Woodward Park including Sneaky Sound System. Market and food stalls will also be available at the event. A kids stage will feature performances by the Ocean Adventure Kids Show, Sam Moran from Play Along With Sam, and the Move & Groove Show. Whip cracking, blue backyard games and line dancing will also be on offer with fireworks ending the night at 9pm. 


From noon at Hallinan Park, Ingleburn you can catch a range of games and entertainment. Also starting at noon, Koshigaya Park will have an evening of stalls, rides, stage entertainment and then a fireworks display starting at 9pm. 


A jumping castle, DJ, water slides, food stalls and a sausage sizzle are all on offer at Canterbury Aquatic and Fitness Centre from 10am to 4pm for a gold coin donation. You can also head on over to Max Parker Leisure & Aquatic Centre, Revesby and Birrong Leisure Centre and Roselands Aquatic Centre to enjoy rides and a sausage sizzle from 10am until 4pm for a gold coin donation. 


John Street will have a range of free activities, market stalls and entertainment on offer from 8am until 1pm. You can then head on over to Argyle Street to view The Macarthur Lions Street Parade to check out vintage cars, local businesses, schools and more from 11:15am until noon.
