Sydney's Floral Tribute To The Martin Place Siege Will Be Removed Today

Ahead of the rain forecast for Sydney over the next few days, the authorities have decided to remove the floral tributes at Martin Place after confirming the move with the families of Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson.

At Martin Place this morning, the clean up had already started taking place, but the mood remained somber. Notes addressed to both Tori and Katrina remained scattered amongst the fragrant bouquets and passersby stood idle as they took in the lovely words left by Sydnersiders.

Meanwhile, seemingly reluctantly, volunteers from the Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service and the Red Cross were assisting City of Sydney staff in collecting the flowers and tributes for the families of the deceased, who will be attending a funeral for Tori and a memorial for Katrina today.

This morning's clean up at Martin Place.

New South Wales Premier Mike Baird confirmed that the flowers and tributes won't be wasted, "We'll be grabbing the flowers and they'll be clean mulched which will enable us to hold them in storage for appropriate future use, hopefully at a memorial site to be determined with the families in the longer term," he said.

"The cards will be brought together and put into a book which will ensure that the family members will see forever the tributes that have flowed from this great city and the people that make up this great city over the past few days."
