Popular Sydney Beach Named The Most Dangerous In The STATE
The most dangerous beach in NSW has been named and it's one of Sydney's favourites.
According to data from Surf Life Saving NSW, Coogee beach had the highest number of ambulance requests during the summer of 2015/ 2016.
Of the 47 requests, 19 were for assumed spinal injuries - more than any other beach in the state.
Andrew Short, a coastal studies researcher from the University of Sydney, told the Sydney Morning Herald that "dumping waves" combined with a steep, narrow sand face puts people bodysurfing at greater risk of injury.
"Bodysurfers, usually young males, catch the waves and are dumped head-first into the sand," he said.
"Coogee has a low level of risk to people in the surf, but regrettably there is a significant number of people being injured by dumping waves."
