Salim Mehajer Charged With Assault After Leaving Lockup

Controversial former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer has now been charged with assaulting a TV reporter, just hours after allegedly assaulting a taxi driver at Sydney’s Star Casino.

Mehajer has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm after Seven Network journalist Laura Banks was apparently injured trying to question him after he had just spent the night in police custody.

Banks made a complaint to police after Mehajer slammed a car door on her as he left Sydney City Central Police Station yesterday.

The altercation happened after Mehajer was charged with stealing a taxi driver’s EFTPOS machine and then throwing it at his head in a altercation at The Star casino in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police have charged him with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and larceny before releasing him from cells about 12.30pm Sunday.

Leaving the lockup and jumping into the back of a cab, journalists informed the taxi driver that Mehajer had just been charged with assaulting a driver just hours earlier.

“No, no, I’m not going to take you … get out,” the driver said.

Mr Mehajer then refused to leave the taxi.

“It’s my choice, I don’t want to drive them,” he said.

Finally a police officer arrived and ordered Mr Mehajer leave the cab.

He refused and the officer eventually had to force him out.

Mr Mehajer was left to walk around trying to avoid journalists questions until a friend arrived in a white sports car and the pair drove off.
