Sorry Guys, The Green Card Lottery Is NO MORE
If you’re an Aussie wanting to make the move to the U.S. it all just got a little harder, though, it’s easy to understand why.
After the Halloween terror attack in New York yesterday, it was discovered that the man behind the shooting, which left at least eight people dead and more than 15 injured, came to the States from Uzbekistan, through the Green Card lottery.
As a result, Trump has promised to abolish the current lottery, instead replacing it with a process based less on ‘luck of the draw’ and more on merit.
President Trump yesterday made a statement, "Today we mourn the horrifying terrorist attack in New York City, just blocks away from the site of the World Trade Centre," Trump said on Thursday during a meeting with his cabinet at the White House.
"I am today starting the process of terminating the diversity lottery program. I'm going to ask Congress to immediately initiate work to get rid of this program," he said.
The diversity lottery program, often referred to as the Green Card lottery, is commonly used by Australians to obtain residency and work status in the US. "It's very simple. What we are demanding is merit-based immigration," Trump said on Thursday.
"We want people who are going to help our country, people who are going to keep our country safe. We don't want lotteries where the wrong people are in the lotteries."
The system makes 55,000 permanent resident cards available every year to applicants from "under-represented countries" who meet the basic requirements of having no criminal record and either completing high school or working in an industry identified as one with a demand for workers.
Each year, a handful of countries not considered "under-represented" are exempt from the lottery.
Winners are selected randomly from an estimated 14 million applicants each year. Their families can accompany them to live, study and work in the US for ten years.
We look forward to seeing what President Trump implements in place of the Green Card Lottery, and hopefully it will help to stop tragedies like the Halloween shooting from happening again.
