Parents Charged For Leaving Kids Home Alone While Overseas
Outrage has swept the nation after it was revealed that two Perth children were allegedly left home alone while their parents travelled overseas.
The four and six-year-old are currently in state care after they were allegedly left alone at home.
A 28-year-old woman, who is understood to be in a de facto relationship with the children’s father, was arrested and charged on Thursday evening when she flew into Perth Airport.
Currently, it is not known where the couple had travelled to or if the father is back in Australia.
Child Protection Minister Andrea Mitchell said she was “horrified” by the allegations. WA Police said the children were found alone at a Cloverdale home when officers gained entry through an unlocked door on Wednesday.
A report on the Daily Telegraph states that police allege the children had been left home alone sine Tuesday.
“It will be alleged both parents were overseas at the time the officers entered the property,” a force statement said. “The children were subsequently removed from the property and placed into appropriate care.”
The 28-year-old woman was detained by Australian Border Force officers soon after her arrival at Perth Airport.
She was soon after charged with two counts of having the care and control of a child engaged in conduct knowing that conduct may result in harm to the child.
Police yesterday stressed inquiries into the incident were ongoing.
It is unclear at this stage who alerted authorities to the situation and who called police to the home.
The woman has been granted bail and is due to appear at Perth Magistrates Court on June 22.
