Man Dies After Being Set Alight & Left For Dead Beside Road
A man has succumbed to his injuries after being set on fire and left for dead by the side of a road at Macquarie in Sydney’s north.
Police confirmed that the 23-year-old was found by a passing taxi driver at around 1am yesterday, seriously injured and suffering from life-threatening burns.
The young father of two had told his girlfriend that he was going out with a friend late the night before he was found beside Oakdale Road in Newcastle.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and initially treated him before flying him to Royal North Shore Hospital. During the flight the man sadly died from his injuries.
Speaking with 9 NEWS, the man’s girlfriend Paige Millan said that she was confused and distraught.
“I just want to say I love him and I just want to find out what happened,” she said.
Detectives opened an investigation in the area, closing a number of kilometres along Oakdale Road. After conducting line searches along the main road as well as 30 metres into the nearby bushland, officers seized bags of evidence from the scene including a petrol can.
It’s believed that police were trying to find further evidence that could tell them how the man came to be seriously injured.
Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
