Netflix recently dropped a heart wrenching documentary called American Murder: The Family Next Door to tell the tragic story of Shanann Watts and her children.
If you’re into true crime, then you’ve probably heard about the Chris Watts case, but this documentary is about the victims, not the monster.
The entire film length doco is told through real social media posts, videos, texts, police body cameras, surveillance video and home videos which makes it unbelievably real.
If you haven’t watched it yet, please do, not only does the truth of their story NEED to be heard but it’s an excellent case study on how toxic masculinity affects women.
In 2018, pregnant Shanann Watts and daughters Bella (4) and Celeste (3) went missing.
Her best friend noticed her absence immediately and her husband Chris Watts was notified and ‘claimed’ he had absolutely no idea what happened to them.
Directed by Jenny Popplewell, it is not dramatised for your viewing pleasure, it’s a telling of Shanann’s story from her perspective through her voice and messages supported by an unbiased police investigation.
I think you know how this ends, Chris was guilty of the triple homicide of his wife and two baby girls.
If you want to know the details of the story, watch the documentary.
It’s heartbreaking, tragic and everything in between.
