Lil Nas X was the breakout we didn’t expect this year. With Old Town Road potentially about to claim it’s 19th week atop the Billboard Hot 100 charts, extending its’ world record even further, Lil Nas X is gearing up to release a music video for his next single, Panini.

“Didn’t he already release a music video for Panini?” I hear you ask.

It’s true; Panini did launch alongside a video of some surreal animation by Fvckrender, but it’s basically an over-glorified (and very good) gif that accompanies the official audio. Rodeo, also from his 7 EP, got the same treatment.

Lil Nas X has been working for the past few weeks on a proper music video, and has been posting the progress on social media.

From learning dances, to costuming mockups, to shots from the set, it’s looking like we can expect some intense cyberpunk vibes from the song.

The costumes look great, that dance is looking super slick, and it all seems a far cry from the country trap and meme absurdity we’ve had from Lil Nas X so far.

What has me most excited, though, is who is directing it.

Mike. Diva.

“Who?”

Mike Diva

“Yes I heard you, but who is that?”

Mike Diva is one crazy-talented filmmaker who came up in the magic of the internet era, and perhaps has one of the best senses of aesthetic there is. Every project he’s worked on has such a brilliant, consistent and unique style that you won’t find anywhere else. You’ve probably come across something amazing and hilarious he’s made, from meme trap remixes, to fake political ads.

As well as his own work, Mike Diva has lent his awesome aesthetic to heaps of fantastic projects over the years; you might know him best from Dubstep Guns, a short that went viral eight years ago. The video features “Drop Squad” (get it, because dubstep drops), taking down a factory full of cartoonish villains in spectacular fashion.

You might also have seen The Unauthorised Bash Brothers Experience on Netflix, which Diva co-directed along with The Lonely Island.

The music video supposedly wrapped filming at the end of July, so with all the teasers Lil Nas X has been dropping, we could be seeing it very, very soon.

We don’t yet know what “slapstick cyberpunk” the Panini music video will feature, but with a song that loopable, Mike Diva at the helm, and Lil Nas X’s insurmountable meme game all in one product, we should be in for a treat.

Can’t get enough Lil Nas X? You can catch all his tunes on his iHeartRadio station;
