A caped and masked bandit behind a failed armed robbery and two break-ins in regional NSW is on the run from police.

The would-be robber attempted to steal cash from different businesses in Orange on three separate mornings between June 29 and July 20, police said on Thursday.

The man, who wore a black cape, forced entry to a licensed premises and tried to steal a cash machine on his first would-be heist, then added a face covering to his outfit before spending an hour trying to break in to an ATM in the second incident.

In the most recent attempt, a hotel employee was bound and threatened with a hunting knife and rifle before being ordered into a separate room, before his assailant tried to raid the venue’s poker machines and an ATM.

The man left all three businesses empty-handed and was last seen jumping a fence beside the hotel car park backing onto the railway line and walking down the rail corridor.

Police have released CCTV footage of a man they would like to speak to and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
